About John Smedley
John Smedley has been designing and manufacturing knitwear in Derbyshire, England for over 200 years and is one of the longest reigning businesses in fashion. Due to their expertise and rich history, Smedley has a wealth of knowledge enabling the brand to remain a leader in the knitwear field.
The company was co-founded in 1784 by Peter Nightingale and the first John Smedley; a total of four John Smedleys have run the company. Starting out as a mill specialising in the production of muslin and spinning cotton, the company expanded productions towards the end of the 18th century to include hosiery and knitwear. And in 1825, John Smedley’s son John took over the empire bringing with him energetic and modern views, expanding the business to the next level.
John Smedley Clothing is a business that has always remained within the family. Quality has been the foundation of the brand’s success: the premium merino wool comes from New Zealand, and the fine Sea Island cotton has been a mainstay of the company since 1922. The consistent creation of traditional pieces and future classics gives the brand a timeless yet stylish appeal.
